To the Reader,
As readers and writers, we are well aware of the power of language. It is through language that we both perceive the world and alter the perspectives of those around us. Language is, at its core, our process of understanding. To put a thought onto the page is to reconcile what we learn with what we already believe, a chance for our thoughts and observations to transform one another.
Gathered in this issue are pieces that handle words carefully and beautifully---pieces that show how we can use language not to hide our truths but to lay them out in the open and how silence can damage our relationships with others. To speak can, at times, be confusing or painful, but our voices are not expendable; they are necessary.
