To the Reader,
Throughout our lives, we spend a lot of time thinking about who we are, where we come from, and how we fit into the fabric of the lives of the people around us. Our worldviews are framed by those who come before us, yet we are ultimately imagining and re-imagining our own life stories. In putting together this issue, we found ourselves continually returning to works of writing that give insight into the ways we learn from both the people we hold close and the people who have left us. These narratives raise questions about legacy and identity—about what it is to know one’s roots and what it is to grow from them.
